Tlakgameng is a village with a history of both settlement and struggle. The area has been inhabited by various groups, including the baKgatla ba ga Mmanaana and the baHurutshe, who established it as their headquarters in the 1880s. In the 1950s, Tlakgameng was the birthplace of Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, a key figure in the 1956 women’s march. The village also faces challenges like unemployment and poverty, and has been the site of government projects that have sometimes struggled to succeed. 

Early Settlement: The first recorded mention of the village is around 1800, with the baKgatla ba ga Mmanaana residing there. They later left after being attacked by the baNgwaketse in 1808, and the baHurutshe subsequently settled there. 

BaHurutshe Headquarter: The baHurutshe made Tlakgameng their headquarters, becoming the independent baHurutshe boo Manyane in the 1880s.
