Morokweng, a town in South Africa’s North West province, has a history rooted in human settlement and geological significance. It’s known for being the site of the Morokweng impact structure, a large crater created by a meteorite collision millions of years ago. The town itself was first occupied by the Barolong people under Kgosi Maiketso in the 1790s.

Human Settlement: Morokweng was established in the late 18th century by Kgosi Maiketso and his Barolong faction, who had split from the main Barolong group at Kuruman. This marks the beginning of human settlement in the area.

Colonial Era: When Bechuanaland came under British control in 1886, Morokweng was designated a Native Reserve. 

Geological Significance: In 1994, scientists discovered the Morokweng impact structure, a large crater caused by a meteorite impact. The impact is estimated to have occurred around 145 million years ago, during the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary. 

Discovery and Research: The existence of the impact structure was first proposed in 1995 based on geophysical surveys. Further investigations, including core samples and the discovery of a fossilized meteorite in 2006, confirmed its status as an impact site. 

Modern Significance: Morokweng is a significant location for geological research and studies related to impact structures and their potential impact on the Earth’s history.
